About Crisis Nursery of Greater Rochester, Inc.

Mission Statement

To provide a safe haven for young children whose families are embroiled in myriad crises. To that end, our nursery will link parents and caregivers to community agencies providing direct services to develop action plans to address the crisis event.

Perhaps a caregiver has had an accident, or become ill or homeless. Perhaps a parent has been arrested or is under severe stress because of domestic abuse. It happens every day: through no fault of their own, small children are put at risk of neglect or abuse. In Monroe County alone, nearly 6,000 children were reported to Child Protective Services in 2002.

The causes are many, but the results are the same: small children are suddenly placed in a crisis situation, without a safe place to go. That’s why the Crisis Nursery of Greater Rochester was created.

A Temporary Haven

The Crisis Nursery will provide a safe, nurturing environment for children from newborns up to age six whose families are in crisis. However, while our focus is on young children, we will be licensed to care for children from birth up to 18 years old. Our goal is to keep siblings together during a crisis. For up to 72 hours, children can live at the nursery, cared for by a trained staff including a nurse, social workers, and child care workers.

The goals are two-fold: first and most important, to provide temporary care for children at risk of abuse and neglect. But another key objective of the nursery is to offer support services to families and caregivers, so they have a place to turn before abuse occurs. We work to provide the necessary referrals to get families the help they need.

Bridging a Gap, 24/7

The Crisis Nursery is not a permanent solution — it’s a way to bridge the gap between a crisis and a long-term plan to address the underlying issues. We partner with a variety of agencies such as DHS, law enforcement, substance-abuse treatment providers, and other resources to support children and their families, with the goal of preventing problems and reducing recidivism. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the nursery will have the capacity to serve over 1,000 children per year.
